Born in Lisbon. Degree in Sociology at ISCTE; master in Social Sciences at Instituto de Ciências Sociais da Universidade de Lisboa (ICS-UL); PhD in Sociology at ICS-UL with the thesis Human Values and Opposition towards Immigration in Europe, focusing on the impact of individual factors and social contexts on attitudes towards immigrants, on threat perceptions associated to immigrants and on racial prejudice.

Member of the research team of the ICS’s Portuguese Social Attitudes Programme since 1996, participates in some of the most relevant cross-national studies on values and attitudes, such as the International Social Survey Programme (ISSP), the European Values Study (EVS), the Group-Focused Enmity in Europe (GFE) and the European Social Survey (ESS).

Member of the methodological groups of ISSP and EVS, and of the Non-Response Expert Group of the ESS. Currently member of the Questionanire Design Team of the ESS module on Attitudes Towards Immigration that will be part of the ESS Round 7 questionnaire.

Two main lines of research interest: one aiming to analyse the impact of the articulation between individual factors (values and attitudes) and social contexts in the development of discriminatory attitudes; another, focused on the methodology of comparative and longitudinal analysis of social change.
